Info
Malta is an island state and the smallest in the European Union located in the Mediterranean Sea, south of Sicily, west of Tunisia and north of Libya. It consists of 7 islands, 3 of which are habitable. The official language is Maltese and then English. As of January 1, 2018 Malta became member of Eurozone.
The country has been inhabited since 5200 BC. The megalithic buildings confirm the existence of an important prehistoric Neolithic culture on the island. Over time, many passed through this place, such as Greeks, Carthaginians, Romans, Arabs, French, and later the Knights of the Order of Saint John of Jerusalem who settled on the island, leaving their mark.
Valletta, the country's largest city and capital, has been recognized by UNESCO as a World Heritage Site. In the city, visitors will have the opportunity to admire buildings of fine architecture. Should you choose to rent a car, which by the way I recommend, be aware that they drive left-side. Malta has been the setting for several film productions such as Gladiator (2000), Troy (2004), Midnight Express (1978), Munich (2005), Captain Phillips (2013), Popeye (1980), The Count of Monte Christo (2002) and several others.
The flight from Athens to Malta takes about 2 hours. Best time to visit is spring and autumn, while July and August are crowded and all are more expensive.
